Tips for tending to your living masterpiece.

If your home's layout is guided by biophilic design—the love of living things—decorating with plants is a natural way to bring the outside in. Over the past few years, we've had more time to assess areas in our homes that could benefit from low-lift projects, such as building an art gallery or painting the walls. Many homeowners looked to planting, as it has been one of the best ways to liven up a space and enhance its design in the most organic way possible. To kick your indoor greenery game up a notch, we make a case for trees as living art. We spoke to Puneet Sabharwal, CEO and co-founder of Horti, a plant subscription service for tips on how to integrate trees into your interior landscape.

For art that literally bursts out of the frame, opt for a tree over a living wall. It's not only cost-efficient in terms of installation, but allows more creativity and wellness throughout your home. "You might have seen this concept quite a bit if you go into wellness spaces and meditation studios," Sabharwal says. "The connection has been there forever, but since we've had time inside our spaces, there was a heightened desire to be closer to nature."

Fiddle leaf fig trees, ficus audrey (for a jungle feel), and burgundy are three tree options to consider in your plantscape. They all have unique trunks that will make it look like you're sitting under a full-size tree! Sabharwal suggests growing your monstera into an oversize plant to add value as a tropical "tree."

"If you have the light and scope, adding such a big and beautiful plant is such an instant connection with nature," says Sabharwal. Trees are rewarding, from their look to improving the air quality in your home. Light is the key factor to where your living art thrives. It should be placed in an area that is beautifully lit.

If you don't have a green thumb, don't fret: One of the best things about indoor trees is that they don't need much care. (Larger plants are more forgiving and don't require as much TLC as smaller plants do!) And you don't need to start from the ground floor—some of the best indoor trees can be delivered fully grown, right to your doorstep.

"I would suggest starting big. In indoor environments, plants don't grow as fast as you really want them to. Go for a size 20% less than the size that you actually want," Sabharwal advises. That said, a six-foot tree won't become 10 feet within a matter of months—it could take a few years for a growth spurt.

As you narrow down what tree-style works best for you, Sabharwal advises choosing a planter with drainage holes. The cost of trees depends on the variety and the size, with prices typically ranging from $150 to $400. If you're looking for more tips, Puneet Sabharwal's newest book, Happy Plant: A Beginner’s Guide to Cultivating Healthy Plant Care Habits, will give you the confidence to elevate your space one plant at a time.
